Everton 2-0 Manchester City
Saturday, 16 January 2010

The Blues went into the game aiming to stretch their unbeaten run to six matches - and they did so in style.

Steven Pienaar and Louis Saha got on the scoresheet as Everton outclassed Roberto Mancini’s men. In a commanding display from start to finish, the Blues combined power, guile and energy to dominate big-spending City.

Everton got after City straight from the first whistle but it wasn’t until nine minutes before half-time when Pienaar got the goal the Toffees’ superiority merited – the South African using his wand of a right foot to bend a free-kick past the despairing Shay Given.

The goal further buoyed a vibrant Blues side and before long it was 2-0.

In first-half stoppage time, Landon Donovan fired a precision pass through to Saha – the Frenchman drove into the penalty area but had his shirt tugged by Micah Richards and a penalty was awarded.

Saha stepped up to take the spot-kick himself and coolly slotted home to double Everton’s advantage.

Roared on by a passionate Goodison crowd, the Blues continued to control proceedings in the second half to secure a convincing victory.
