Gylfi Sigurdsson says Everton’s first goal against Brighton was a prime example of why he is enjoying his football with the Blues.
The Iceland midfielder has been in fine form so far this season, with six goals and two assists to his name already, including teeing up Richarlison for the first of the Brazilian’s brace against the Seagulls.
A fluid move saw Everton tear apart the visitors. Kurt Zouma brilliantly headed clear a corner, Sigurdsson picked up possession and, after exchanging passes with Bernard, played in Richarlison to fire past Albion keeper Mat Ryan.
It is that kind of flowing attacking football that the 29-year-old is both relishing personally and orchestrating from his number 10 position on the pitch.
“It was a good counter attack,” he told evertontv. “Bernard and I linked up well and it was a great run from Richy. That made it easy for me just to slip him in.
“That was the only place I could play that pass, so I just had to make sure the weight of it was right for Richy to hit it first time. It was a great finish from him.
“I enjoy playing through the middle and it’s great to have players around me making runs and others who can get you on the ball to make good passes. I really enjoyed the game because it felt like we could create a lot of chances.
“I feel really good and the team is playing with a lot of confidence. That’s four wins out of five [in the league] so we are doing well and I think I am too. Hopefully we can continue playing like we have in these last few games.
“We have been working very hard on the training pitch with the manager and all of the boys have been putting the work in. We can see that coming through at the moment.”
The win over Brighton means Everton have taken 47 points from their last 20 games at Goodison Park.
Only West Ham United and Huddersfield Town have taken points off the Blues in the Premier League so far this season and Sigurdsson hopes the squad can continue to make it difficult for opposing teams to come away from the Grand Old Lady with a result.
“That is very important,” he added. “The last few performances have been very good and we feel good here.
“We were really good against Brighton for about 70-75 minutes. Of course, they got back into it with their goal, but I thought that up that moment and in the second half, we were dominant.
“It is a long season. You have to be at it every week because every game is tough in this league. At the end of the season you get what you deserve so we have to make sure we are as high as possible.”
