Seamus Coleman says Everton will return from the current international break determined to move forward following Sunday’s victory over Chelsea.

Coleman captained Marco Silva’s team for the 18th time in Premier League combat this season as goals from Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson saw off the London side.

And the Irishman is urging Everton to swoop on the momentum gained from a rousing second 45-minute display against Chelsea – and move closer to the Blues’ longer-term objective of muscling into the Premier League’s top-six places.

Coleman is set to skipper his nation in European Championship qualifiers against Gibraltar and Georgia before reporting back to his club for a game at West Ham United on 30 March.

“We are capable of results like the one against Chelsea but it is about being consistent and I think that is the next step for us because we want to be challenging the top six in future,” said Coleman.

“The frustration this season has come from having one or two good results and performances but then slipping away in the next game.

“We want to build on these three points and that is the challenge for us now.

“We needed the result against Chelsea… it was important to win against one of the top six in front of our own fans and show we are capable of beating those teams.  Now we want to move forward after the international break.”

Coleman led by example against Chelsea after overcoming the illness which forced him out of the previous week’s meeting with Newcastle United.

He had more touches of the ball [62] than any of his teammates and covered 6.7 miles – clocking a top speed of 20.1mph – as he bombed up and down the right flank.

Indeed, it was full-back Coleman who popped up in Chelsea’s box and caused the panic which led to Marcos Alonso fouling Richarlison for a penalty.

Icelander Sigurdsson tapped in after goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga had saved his original kick, adding to Richarlison’s earlier strike and wrapping up Everton’s victory at a rocking Goodison Park.

Everton have claimed seven points from the past 12 available. Silva's team beat Cardiff City and lost to Newcastle United either side of a home Merseyside derby stalemate, prior to the Chelsea clash.

“Everything about the Chelsea result was so important,” added Coleman, who has won seven and drawn five of his league matches as captain this term.

“We were very disappointed with our result against Newcastle, the way we let it slip.

“But we had a great atmosphere at home against Liverpool and the fans carried that on at the weekend. 

“That definitely influences the players.

“We need to give the supporters something to cheer about and too often this season that hasn't been the case.

“But when they get right behind us, Goodison is a very tough place for our opponents.

“That is what we've prided ourselves on for many years, that atmosphere and teams finding it tough to come here.

“Right at the start of the second half on Sunday, Dominic put a ball across the box, the fans got with us and we went on to achieve a brilliant result.”
