DCL On Everton’s Siege Mentality

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has underlined the importance of everyone at Everton sticking together, as the Blues No.9 revelled in the Club proving doubters wrong this season.

The Toffees made it four matches unbeaten with a 1-1 draw at Luton Town on Friday night, following up their superb run of three wins in six days with sealed their top-flight status for a 71st consecutive campaign.

Calvert-Lewin netted from the penalty spot at Kenilworth Road to make it four goals in the past five matches for the striker.

And, following a challenging campaign which brought two separate points deductions, the 27-year-old spoke of his pride to be fighting for the Club and passionate Evertonians.

“Scoring is a great feeling. It’s why I want to play football,” said Calvert-Lewin.

“I always say I love scoring goals, love scoring in front of the away end – it’s nice to do that in front of our fans.

“It was a tough battle; we always knew it was going to be.

“They’re fighting for their lives, so we knew we had to work hard, dig deep and stay disciplined.

“I thought we did that, and we were unlucky not to score a couple more.

“We felt a lot of people were against us [this season]. We fought against that and stuck together.

“With Friday’s game being on TV, I think everyone wanted it to be a bottom of the table scrap, didn’t they? Unlucky.

“We’re obviously happy to be in the position that we are. Not fighting that and being able to come into the game, play with freedom and confidence.

“We didn’t take the three points, but we’re still fighting and want to finish as high as we possibly can.”

After a difficult run of 23 matches without scoring, Calvert-Lewin has sprung back into explosive form.

The England international credited the support from his manager Sean Dyche and teammates for helping bring goals back to his game.

“I’ve had as much [support from the dressing room and manager] as I needed, really. I always reflect on my own performances, and I know when I’m not quite there," he continued.

“Nobody puts more pressure on me than myself. It’s a good group and they supported me through it.

“I always knew that I was going to score eventually. I was just a matter of time.”

Calvert-Lewin's electric form has come at the perfect time not just for Club, but possibly for country as well.

The forward was part of the England squad that reached the European Championship final back in 2021, and with the expansion of squad sizes increased to 26 players for this summer's tournament, he could possibly be on a flight to Germany this summer.

“That’s always my main goal, to play for my country – it’s the best feeling in the world,” Calvert-Lewin added.

“For now, I’m fit and healthy and scoring goals and I’ll see where that takes me. I believe that on my day, I belong there.”
