Tough-tackling midfielder Joe Williams has been at the Blues' Academy since the age of seven, becoming a first-year scholar in June 2013.

He broke into Everton's Under-21 set-up that season and was a near ever-present in the centre of the park while also aiding the Under-18s to Premier League glory.

In December 2014, Williams was named on the bench for Everton's first-team game against FC Krasnodar.

Williams’s performances in 2015-16 earned him the Under-21s Player-of-the-Season award.

However, a knee injury sustained in the final fixture of the campaign ruled him out of action for six months, before he suffered another problem in November 2016, this time with his ankle.

Williams recovered in February 2017 and subsequently signed a new three-and-a-half year contract, extending his Goodison Park stay until June 2020.

While playing a vital role in the Under-23s side that won the inaugural Premier League 2 title, Williams was also an unused substitutes for a handful of first-team games towards the end of the 2016-17 campaign.

In July 2017, Williams signed for Barnsley on a season-long loan and went on to gain valuable first-team experience in the Championship. He made 34 appearances for the Yorkshire side and netted his first professional goal - in spectacular style - against Burton Albion in October, Williams's stunning 30-yard strike winning the Championship's goal of the month prize.

In August 2018, Williams joined Championship team Bolton Wanderers for the 2018-19 campaign. He played a further 30 games in England's second tier and was one of the Lancashire club's brightest performers during a turbulent season at University of Bolton Stadium.

Contracted until: June 2020
